In 1948 Harley Earl was granted access to view the Lockheed P-38 aeroplane at the Selfridge Field Air Force base near Detroit. It was there where he got the inspiration for the tail fin design on cars. The first car to show off the new tail fin design was the 1949 Cadillac which by the way was Cadillac's best sales year ever. Everyone followed suit but tail fins were getting bigger and bigger until the era came to an end in 1959.
